On Thursday June 27th 2019 the local Laois Girls Camogie team Banríon Gaels held the finale of their 6 week Programme “Camán to Camogie” event in McCann Park Portarlington. Banríon Gaels is a camogie club for players from Portarlington, Killenard, Emo & surrounding areas. For the 6 week programme they invite  girls from Portarlington, Killenard, Emo and surrounding areas to come and play camogie for 6 weeks with training sessions twice a week.  It provided girls from Junior and Senior Infants and First Class with an introduction to camogie with the emphases on fun, enjoyment, and developing the skills to continue to play and stay in the game. On Thursday’s event players put into practice all the new skills they learned over the weeks.  The first focus of the programme was on developing the basic movement and motor skills. These skills form the basis for the later development of the specific skills of Camogie and all other sports- The ABC’s of sport: Agility, Balance,Coordination, Runninf, Jumping, Throwing, Catching,Passing,Kicking and Striking skills.

Colgan Sports were delighted to support the event with a pop-up shop. We were on-hand to deliver fitting to the girls for their first helmets and hurleys, equipment they need to continue their involvement with the sport of Camogie.  Our Mycro helmets were a popular choice with “Pink” being the favourite colour  among the little ladies. We also had a display of camogie and hurling accessories – Karakal Grips and O’Meara Sliotars as well as Hurlóg’s – a starter hurley for little ones which is made of soft foam, available in 3 sizes and comes with small light sliotar.

Wishing the best of luck to all the Banríon Gaels ladies on their camogie paths!
